Eunsung Corporation is to start volume output of glass fiber for High Efficiency Particulate Air Filters (HEPA filters) used in semiconductor and LCD clean rooms at its plant in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province, the company said on 14 June 2006. HEPA filters are capable of filtering more than 99.97% of particles as tiny as 0.3 microns (one micron is equal to one millionth of a meter), and the move into mass production is expected to save glass fiber import costs. The company has adopted “melt blown” and “complex emission” technologies to melt and produce high-molecular components. The technologies can produce fiber as thin as 1.3 microns, and the company has an annual capacity of 500 tons of 1.7m-wide HEPA filter components. “We have entered into the industrial filter market with the new component”, said company CEO Lee Young-gyu. “We plan to boost the technology level to 800nm fiber this year, and introduce an enhanced filter with 99.999% filtering capabilities by early next year”. The company is also aiming to test-produce nano-fiber application products for bullet proof vests, artificial skin and rechargeable battery membranes in the next year. The worldwide industrial filter market is estimated to be worth USD 6.3 billion, and nano fiber is emerging as a next-generation rival to glass fibers in the filter area.
