On 1 January 1996, US firm, Dupont, one of the world“s top two PVB producers, increased prices of its polyvinylbutyral “Butacite”(R). The increase, in the region of 10%, may vary according to the type of “Butacite”(R) and the thickness of the interstice. Between 1994 and 1995, the cost of raw materials used to manufacture PVB rose by around 10%. DuPont has also introduced a price-list for PVC “Butacite”(R) in ECUs (European Currency Units). The ECU price-list eliminates the need for price adjustments due to variations in exchange rates for European currencies. “Butacite”(R) is the registered trademark for the PVB interstice produced and marketed by DuPont and used in the production of laminated safety glass for motor vehicles and for the building industry. “Butacite”(R), available in both transparent and coloured sheets, makes glass particularly resistant to penetration and shattering and also filters out ultra-violet radiation. DuPont manufactures “Butacite”(R) in Fayetteville, North Carolina, US, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, US, in Uentrop, Germany and in Ulsan, South Korea. Total world output of PVC amounts to around 135 million sq. m.; 75% is used by the automobile industry and 25% in the building sector.
