28 August 1998: UK-based group Demaglass is to cut 90 jobs in its tableware division in Chesterfield and 70 in its lighting and pharmaceuticals division in Doncaster, according to a recent report. Demaglass, which has also cut five staff at its technology division, reportedly blamed the strong pound for its decision. “Our lighting business exports more than 70% of all it produces, our technology business exports 80% and our tableware business more than half. If the value of the pound had increased over a period, we would have had time to react, but the rapid appreciation just causes orders to dry up,” said chief executive Don Greaves.
