German group Degussa-Huels AG said its subsidiary DMC2 AG is now free to sell its Platiline technology after the Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office revoked a suit by a UK rival. Restrictions on sales have been lifted as an infringement suit filed by the unnamed rival no longer has a legal basis after the patent office“s decision, Degussa-Huels said in a statement. DMC2 only has two recognizable competitors world-wide: UK specialist metals group Johnson Matthey PLC and US-based Engelhard Corp. Company spokesman Michael Hoffmann said DMC2 can now affirm its position in the advanced materials market. It expects 20% additional sales growth for Platiline now that the restrictions have been lifted, but declined to give an indication of annual sales from the product. The product line is a relatively small area within DMC2, said Hoffmann. The Platiline technology is a glass industry innovation that uses a sophisticated spraying process to coat all ceramic components with functional platinum.
