19 March 1998: UK glassmaker Darby Group reported a 52% rise in 1997 pre-tax profits to UK 3.2 million on the back of its focus on higher-margin bent and tempered glass and devotion to cost control. The group also reportedly built more depots, in order to launch its rapid delivery service, which the company says gets flat and safety glass to customers in quick time. It has also found that the service opens up new markets for tempered glass. During the first half of the current year, older tempering furnaces at the Scunthorpe and Gloucester (UK) plants are being replaced, and there are plans to open a new depot and tempering facility in Hampshire (UK) which will enable the group to cover the South Coast. Turnover in 1997 rose 10% to UK 22.6 million. The total dividend is up to 2.6 p per share from 2.2 p on earnings of 8 p against 6.11 p.
