The Crimean Soda Plant (Krasnoperekopsk, Crimea), the Ukraine“s largest producer of soda ash, cut soda production by 37,000 tons or 5.16% to 680,000 tons in 2006, compared with 2005. In particular, production of brand A soda ash was cut by 24,000 tons or 6.17% to 365,000 tons in 2006, compared with 2005. Sales rose by UAH 32.83 million or 7% to UAH 501.83 million in 2006, compared with 2005. “The fall in the production of the enterprise“s main product was connected with the restrictions on supply of natural gas during the winter cold of January-February 2006 as well as the temporary fall in sales during the summer period. The plant achieved its usual production indicator of about 60,000 tons per moth toward the end of last year”, the statement said. According to the statement, the main importers of soda ash in 2006 were Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Cyprus and Switzerland. The Crimean Soda Plant cut soda production by 12,000 tons or 3.35% to 346,000 tons in the January-June period of 2006, including production of heavy soda (brand A) by 3,300 tons or 1.65% to 203,000 tons, compared with 2005. The company ended 2005 with a net profit of UAH 64.522 million; net revenues increased by UAH 102.356 million or 27.37% to UAH 476.385 million in 2005, compared with 2004. Registered as an open joint-stock enterprise, the Crimean Soda Plant produces heavy (brand A) and light soda ash (brand B). It is the sole producer and exporter of heavy soda ash in the Ukraine. According to information from the company, as of April 2005 RSJ Erste Beteiligungs GmbH (Hamburg, Germany) owned 89.48% of the shares while Renaissance Securities Limited (Cyprus) owned 5.16%. According to the Top 100 rating of Ukrainian companies published by the InvestGazeta newspaper, the Crimean Soda Plant is in the sphere of influence of businessman Dmytro Firtash of the RosUkrEnergo group.
