According to the latest report from the company, Gorilla Glass is being used on more than a billion devices
Check the specifications of most recently produced touch-screen smartphones, and among the many specs and numbers you will most likely find Gorilla Glass. The product name is a trademark for a specialised flat glass manufactured by Corning. Corning Incorporated also produces other kinds of glass for packaging, ceramics, and related materials for industrial and scientific applications. Due to the expanding market for touchscreen smartphones, Corning has experienced a substantial amount of growth in the market for Gorilla Glass. According to the latest report from the company, Gorilla Glass is being used on more than a billion devices. In the third quarter of 2012, Gorilla Glass brought the company 363 million USD, 21% over the same period last year. It’s uses in tablets and netbooks have helped push Corning’s third quarter profits to 2.04 billion USD, and increase of 7% over the last year’s thrid quarter results. (However, total sales dropped on a year-on-year basis as its telecoms and environmental units weakened).
Corning is always busy with new research, and recently announced the successor of Gorilla Glass, Gorilla Glass 2. According to the firm, the new glass is as tough as the predecessor, but 20% thinner. This new product enables device manufacturers to create better, slimmer and sleeker devices with brighter images and improved touch sensitivity.
