25 September 1997: The US firm Corning, based in New York, said that its profits for this year will not meet the high standards that were expected. Blaming slower-than-anticipated growth of optical fibre and cable sales – two areas that Corning sees as the key to growth in the future – Corning reduced the share profit to between US$1.90 and US$1.95 from the US$2.05 originally forecast.
