Two new publications from The Corning Museum of Glass offer the latest look at the world of contemporary glass, as well as new research about an important period in the production of glass furniture. In addition, a new video produced by The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass offers tips on beginning flameworking techniques. “European Glass Furnishings for eastern Palaces” is a supplement to the Museum“s major summer exhibition, Glass of the Maharajas, and explores the little-known era in glassmaking history when European glassmakers tailored one-of-a-kind and limited-production glass furniture to the tastes of the wealthy Indian elite. The book showcases both the pieces and the glassmakers with vivid images, detailed descriptions and rich historical background. New Glass Review 27, edited by Tina Oldknow, the museum“s curator of modern glass, offers a survey of jury-selected works in glass submitted by artists from around the world. The 2006 volume features 100 important contemporary sculptures, vessels and other works in glass by both emerging and established artists. Designed to help beginning students learn basic glassworking techniques, the museums“s DVD entitled “An Introduction to Flameworking with Italian glassworker Emilio Santini” focuses on the basics of the flameworking technique on both solid and hollow works. The Corning Museum of Glass is a non-profit, independent, educational institute, home to the most comprehensive and celebrated collection of glass in the world, with more than 45,000 objects reflecting 3,500 years of glassmaking history.
