14 May 1998: US-based groups Corning Incorporated and CTR Group, Ltd., announced that Corning will be the exclusive optical fibre sponsor of Project Oxygen, the global undersea optical fibre communications cable network being constructed by CTR Group, Ltd. of Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. The sponsorship agreement allows Corning the opportunity to supply submarine fibre from its line of non-zero dispersion-shifted fibres, optimized for very high capacity and long distance, for use throughout the Oxygen Network. In selecting Corning as its exclusive fibre sponsor, the CTR Group recognized the product performance and technical assistance that will be made available to them by working with the world“s leading manufacturer and supplier of optical fibre. “We are pleased to have the support of Corning, which has one of the most advanced optical fibre technologies in the world,” said Neil Tagare, chairman and CEO of CTR. “This agreement ensures that the quality and performance of the Oxygen Network will be unsurpassed.” “Project Oxygen represents a significant cooperative effort by many of the key players in the telecommunications industry to link the world with fibre. Corning is pleased to be a sponsor and preferred supplier of the optical fibre that will make this network a reality,” said Corning“s senior vice president Wendell Weeks. Project Oxygen Network is a planned global optical fibre undersea cable communications network with a first phase comprising approximately 158,000 kilometers of optical fibre cable, 101 landing points in 74 countries and locations, and a minimum capacity of 640 Gbps on every segment. Cable installation is scheduled to begin in 1999, with the major trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific links operational in 2000.
