Glass producers CIV and Owens Illinois are pursuing different strategies on the Brazilian market, where they are investing USD 10 million to produce container glass and glassware. CIV, based at Pernambuco, is targeting the C and D consumers, for whom it will present 30 new products in 2006, with the aim of securing a 25% increase on sales, said commercial manager Jose Henrique Lisboa. Between 2004 -2007, CIV has scheduled investments of USD 50 million in product development, design and capacity expansion. Among the projects is the expansion of storage at the Vitoria unit (Pernambuco) at a cost of BRL 14 million, to centralize production of household glass products. The unit has an output of 300 million units per year and accounts for 20% of CIV“s turnover. Owens Illinois, owner of 80% in Cisper, is expanding the production of fine glasses by 15% . The investment will be made at the Rio de Janeiro unit, while design is being imported from the Colombian subsidiary. Meanwhile, Nadir Figueiredo has set up an office in Buenos Aires, where the company aims to increase sales by 25% in 2006. Until now, its only international presence was an office in Belgium to handle exports to Europe. Nadir also struck a distribution deal with MYF.
