US-based manufacturer of building materials, CertainTeed Corporation, has begun full commercial production of fibre cement siding products at the company“s new plant in Oregon. Construction of the facility – the first new manufacturing site to be built by any CertainTeed business in more than 20 years – began in early 1998. Full production began early in August, after a series of successful preliminary test runs. Although White City has only been in full production for a short time, CertainTeed“s FiberCement Products Division has been selling fibre cement siding products, under all three CertainTeed siding brand names – CertainTeed, Wolverine and Ashland-Davis – since acquiring a fiber cement products plant in Roaring River, North Carolina, from ABTco earlier this year. “The addition of fibre cement siding products is a natural complement to our other lines of building products,” says Chris Kliefoth, vice president of CertainTeed“s new FiberCement Products Division. “This new product line allows us to further expand in specific markets and increases the scope of what we can provide to building materials customers throughout North America.” In a recent company statement, CertainTeed said it selected White City for its new facility because of the availability and quality of labour, access to transportation, as well as land and building costs. The plant, which will eventually employ approximately 80 people, supplies customers throughout the western United States.
