11 December 1997: Japan“s Central Glass Co. Ltd. is supplying the glass used in new automotive anti-rain anti-fogging mirrors developed for a major international carmaker. The Japanese firm Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. announced in mid-November that it had developed the titanium-coated outside mirror to improve rear visibility in rainy weather. Nissan said it would start installing the Titanium Clear Outside Mirror in a passenger car to be introduced in Japan in spring 1998, with use of the new mirrors then being expanded to become standard equipment on other Nissan models. The mirror, which uses photocatalytic super-hydrophilic technology from another Japanese firm, Toto Ltd., has a titanium dioxide coating baked onto its glass surface. The strong hydrophilicity, or water attraction, of the coating causes raindrops to spread out, forming a thin film of water and not hindering visibility. The mirror units themselves will actually be produced by Ichikoh Industries Ltd. of Japan.
