Central Glass Co. Ltd. announced on 29 September 2006 that it has won a patent lawsuit with Abbott Laboratories Inc., US, against Baxter International Inc., related to the anaesthesia drug sevofluran. Central Glass, a major sheet glass maker, based in Japan, who also makes drugs, including sevofluran, had filed a lawsuit in May 2006 with the Tokyo District Court saying the content of generic drug produced by Baxter violated its sevofluran patent. The court ruling could ban Baxter from importing and selling its drug in Japan. Central Glass official Takeo Tanaka said it uses Abbott“s sales channels to market sevofluran worldwide. At the beginning of 2006, Baxter started selling its generic drug in Japan and the US. Baxter spokeswoman Yuko Kidoguchi said the company maintains its view that it has not violated any patents. She added that Baxter is considering filing a counter lawsuit against the companies.
