5 February 1998: Czech Republic export firm Bohemia Crystalex Trading (BCT), owned by Porcela Plus after having acquired a majority stake in the company last year, said it exported glass worth Kc1.421 billion, 6% more than planned for 1997. “We have around 500 customers in 74 countries. The biggest buyer territories for Czech glass are the United States, Japan, western Europe, Russia, Britain, Australia and Canada, to where around 75% of the exports went,” financial director Jiri Klima said. BCT was formed in the middle of 1996 after the two biggest domestic glass producers, Crystalex and Sklo Bohemia Svetla, left Skloexport. Its initial turnover in the incomplete second half of 1996 was Kc 430 million. The company exported goods representing only 15% of its turnover through Skloexport, down from 25% in 1996. “Our turnover this year will reach Kc 2.5 billion in free-on-board prices. This will make us the biggest supplier of Czech utility glass in the Czech Republic,” Klima said. This year BCT said it wants to focus on creating its own representation network on prospective markets and on expanding onto new markets, in particular in south America, the far East and the former Soviet Union.
