Reversing a previous decision, Portuguese glass products manufacturer BA Vidro, formerly Fabrica de Vidros Barbosa & Almeida, will continue production at its plant in Marinha Grande, central Portugal, it was reported on 2 January 2003. The plan to save the factory came after the company and the Portuguese Government reached a deal on state aid needed for the plant to remain operational. Withough the agreement, BA Vidro would have moved production to Spain. The aid plan will be implemented at the beginning of 2004. The plan includes the construction of two and the modernisation of one of the existing furnaces. The total investment in the factory has been estimated at less than EUR 60 million. With production worth EUR 55 million , BA Vidro“s Marinha Grande plant is the company“s largest. The company also has facilities in Avintes and Gaia, both in northwestern Portugal, and two in Spain. The Marinha Grande plant currently employs 320. BA Vidro produces nearly 570,000 tonnes of glass products a year and is the second largest supplier of glass packages in the Iberian Peninsula. The plant in Marinha Grande was bought in 1993.
