A long-vacant commercial building on West Lane in Stockton, California may come back to life in the next few months as the second manufacturing plant for a Southern California window company. Daniel and Stephen Schwartz, brothers and co-owners of ATI Windows of Upland, purchased the former Young“s Market Co. (a liquor wholesale distributor) building at 2244 West Lane in December for a reported US$ 2.48 billion. “We“ve got a significant amount of work to do to get up and running, but we hope to be manufacturing windows (in Stockton) by Spring,” Stephen Schwartz said. While he suggested the operation would begin with just a handful of employees, “by the end of the year I would hope we would have several dozen.” Currently, the 6-year-old company employs more than 100 people in Upland, producing vinyl- and aluminum-frame windows for homes. Most of the work is done by machines. “We“re highly automated compared to a lot of companies in our industry,” Schwartz said. The new owner added that the window-making operation will occupy about 80,000 square feet of the 143,000-square-foot building. The remainder of the space is being offered for lease.
