Japanese glass major Asahi Glass Co Ltd will invest a total of JPY 1.5 billion (USD 13.7 million/EUR 11.01 million) to double laminated glass output at its Kajima plant in eastern Japan, it was reported on 27 February 2004. From the autumn of 2004 the Kajima plant will start producing 1.2 million sq m of laminated glass a year, two times more than its current annual output. The total demand from the Japanese market for laminated glass was steady at some 500,000 sq m a year until 2003, when it increased to 1.15 million sq m. Domestic demand for laminated glass is expected to reach a total of 2.15 million sq m in 2005, due to growing demand from house builders. Asahi Glass will add a new production line at the Kajima plant, which manufactures large-size laminated glass plates with dimensions of 3.8 m by 2.5 m.
