The Vision 50 medium-term business plan of Japans Asahi Fiberglass will take the company up to its 50th anniversary in 2006. Envisaged under the plan are the promotion of existing businesses such as insulation and construction materials, and filament yarn, and speeding the development of new businesses that the company has been involved in for the past three to four years. One of the new businesses is thermoplastic resin composites. As well as standard compounds, Asahi Fiberglass is developing masterbatches with increased fiberglass loadings to significantly enhance strength . Maximum loadings of 70% can be achieved, allowing weight reduction in structural components used in automobiles, among other applications. In the automobile sector, following the acquisition of the thermal and sound insulation materials business of Yamahisa Tokushu Garasu Kogyo, Asahi Fiberglass will be able to raise competitivity by putting in place an integrated production framework starting with fiberglass, while reinforcing its marketing position through direct dealings with automakers. The company plans to link this with application development including composite materials.
