2 July 1998: US-based Apogee Enterprises Inc. said it expects by the end of calendar 1998 to begin making coatings for computer monitors at a production line relocated to its Southern California facility. Apogee said the Southern California facility will support contracts recently awarded to the company totalling US$ 15 million to US$ 20 million. The contracts include a long-term agreement with a large electronics manufacturer to supply coatings to the curved glass surfaces of cathode ray tubes (CRT“s) used in computer monitors. In a move related to the relocation to Southern California, Apogee suspended Optium CRT production at its facility in Faribault, Minnesota in May. “The relocation of our Optium CRT coating facility to the West Coast has taken somewhat longer to develop than originally planned. However, our long-term supply agreements and our repositioning closer to our customers is a major move forward in strengthening our CRT coatings business,” said Russell Huffer, Apogee“s president and chief executive officer.
