Guardian Flachglas, Guardian Industries“ German affiliate, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at its future plant site in Thalheim, Germany. Guardian“s investment will give birth to the first float glass plant in Saxony-Anhalt and to the most modern such plant in Germany. The Guardian Flachglas project totals an investment of US$ 192 million. The float glass plant is set for a daily production of some 550 tonnes of flat glass. A high speed coater will enable Guardian to meet the growing needs of energy efficient high quality coated glass. The flat glass produced by the new plant will serve markets in the construction, furniture and automotive industries. Production is targeted to start in the fourth quarter of 1996. More than 1,000 new jobs will be created directly and indirectly, of which 250 will be located in the plant. Guardian employs worldwide some 10,000 people, of which 2,500 are located in Europe. Guardian Industries was founded in 1932 and has since become a leading worldwide manufacturer of float glass and float glass based products. Guardian Industries European headquarters are situated in Luxembourg. It is from there that Guardian Europe coordinates Guardian“s operations in Spain, Hungary, Luxembourg and Germany.
