The Vietnamese Government has identified $54.39 billion worth of infrastructure development needed by the year 2000 and building manufacturer suppliers are grappling with escalating demand. Presently there are 5 million tonnes of cement produced every year, but in five years there will be a requirement of 20 million tonnes. Similarly, sheet glass used in construction projects is facing a supply problem. At present, 3.5 million sq. m. of 2 mm-thick glass are produced per year, but by 2000, 35-40 million sq. m. will be needed. As a result, it is difficult to accurately measure current activity. According to the Vietnam Australia Building Industry Services Pty. Ltd., in Saigon alone, 83 construction projects are under way, including a mix of residential, tourism, retail and government complexes.
