It has been announced that the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) has embarked on a massive glass replacement campaign in war-torn Bosnia. Heavy-duty plastic, emblazoned with the UNHCR insignia, drapes over war-shattered windows. It is a first step in the glazing process. Through UNHCR, US, Italian, Czech and other foreign glass suppliers are shipping enough glass to Bosnia to create a metre-high wall from London to Paris, said Mark Cotts, UNHCR“s Sarajevo chief who is managing the project. Bosnian glass firms are removing shards and installing finished windowpanes. “We“re putting in 400,000 sq. m. of glass over a six-month period,” Cotts said. However, UNHCR“s work will satisfy a mere 30% of the capital city“s needs, without addressing those of the rest of the country.
