Swarovski North America, Ltd., which makes crystal for the jewelry, fashion, gift and lighting industries, is expanding its plant in the Howard Industrial Park, Rhode Island. Swarovski, which employs 850 people at two locations in Cranston, is building a 22,000-sq.ft. addition to its facility to house its components division. About 35 employees from that division will move into the addition when it is completed this summer, said Melissa Carden, a company spokeswoman. The addition is the first phase of a plan to add 40,000 to 50,000 sq.ft. at the Howard Industrial Park to house an expanded distribution operation. The work will probably be completed within the next year, Carden said. The City of Cranston, which announced the expansion, said it will eventually mean the addition of 50 jobs. However, Swarovski“s Carden said yesterday that it is uncertain whether the work force in Cranston will increase. Swarovski North America is a subsidiary of the Austria-based crystalmaker.
