Fengyang County in Central China“s Anhui Province plans to turn itself into the country“s base for glass production. Quartzite is abundant in the county with discovered reserves of more than 10.9 billion tons. Currently, at least 400 quartzite manufacturing and processing firms are located in Fengyang, producing a total of 5 million tons of quartz sand per annum, or 28% of the national output. Six well-known enterprises including Taiwan Glass Industry Corp. have invested in the town“s glass sector so far. The government is to help businesses to develop products with high added value like optical glass and to collect and reuse used quartz sand, said official Lin Fujiang. Meanwhile, Fengyang is to host the provisionally titled China Quartz Sand Industry Forum in November 2005 which is expected to attract more than 30 experts from the country“s government bodies and other participants from glass companies and the field of finance.
