SCHOTT: What does glass sound like?

In the Waldsassen Basilica, Germany, the answer comes in an organ: 49 DURAN® glass pipes, each one precisely manufactured at SCHOTT’s Mitterteich plant. What makes this project special isn’t just the final sound. It’s the journey behind it.

The pipes were produced in different diameters and wall thicknesses, with each one cut to an exact length with the precision needed for perfect pitch. For this project, small variations weren’t an option. Knowing where these components would ultimately be used made the work even more meaningful. Not in a lab or on a production line, but in a basilica often called the “baroque heaven of Bavaria.”

Since its invention by SCHOTT founder Otto Schott in 1897, DURAN® borosilicate glass tubing has been used in many ways, but this is not a typical application. What remains unchanged, however, is the standard: precision down to the millimetre.
