FEVE meets with EU Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra

Glass has long been one of the world’s most recyclable packaging materials, and is an ideal choice for brands seeking beautiful, sustainable packaging that protects and preserves its contents. It remains more relevant than ever as a material that is perfectly suited to a circular economy.

As a manufacturer of glass containers, the Ardagh Group is committed to decarbonising to meet customers’ need for low-carbon packaging solutions. Breakthroughs in furnace technologies such as the NextGen Furnace in Ardagh plant in Obernkirchen, Germany, are already making a significant impact, reducing CO2 emissions by incorporating renewable electricity.

These innovations are not without their challenges, however, and the glass container industry requires support and action to resolve cost and timescale bottlenecks in achieving grid connectivity and to make clean power more economically viable.

In his role as president of FEVE – the European Container Glass Federation, Martin Peterson, CEO Glass Europe at Ardagh Group, and delegates from the glass industry recently met with EU Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra and EU Environment and Climate to discuss the supports required to effect the conditions to enable this industry to decarbonise.

Ardagh thanks Commissioner Hoekstra for the open and constructive exchange – and encourage the Commission to build on initiatives such as the Clean Industrial Deal and the Affordable Energy Action Plan with more urgent actions and long-term predictability.
