A new clarity-enhancing coating has been developed by Viratec Thin Films, Inc. for 17″ and 21″ Multigraph monitors made by Nokia of Finland. Viratec claims its Optium 2020 is an electrically conductive metal-oxide coating which is vacuum deposited directly onto the face of the CRT prior to final monitor assembly. The high performance treatment is designed to reduce reflection on a computer monitor from 4.5% to less than 0.3% – making it 15 times less reflective than an untreated display. “The Optium 2020 coating drastically improves picture quality on the display making possible clearer focus and contrast while decreasing reflection. This coating also helps reduce potentially harmful electrostatic and electric field emissions below TCO recommended values,” stated Jan Nylund, Nokia US Product Manager. According to Bruce Kuhlman, Director of Sales and Marketing at Viratec, “some display coatings, such as the spin and silica versions, only slightly reduce reflection, or merely scatter the light causing blurring or fuzziness of characters which downgrades resolution. With Optium 2020 there is a reduction in reflection and a perceived improvement in resolution.”
