The glass fibre used in a composite bridge opened recently in the United States was supplied by US firm Vetrotex CertainTeed. The short bridge was built in Russel, Kansas, US, and utilises an innovative plastic honeycomb which has sufficient strength to support vehicle traffic. A large glass-reinforced plastic cell core separates two glassfibre skins. Kansas Structural Composites, the bridge supplier, claims that the new design is similar or lower in cost than conventional types. In 1997 the University of California is to collaborate with an industrial consortium to construct three composite bridges.
