In addition to the upsurge in demand for speciality beer bottles, the UK-based company United Glass has reported a significant increase in demand for glass within the large and stable food jars market. Sales of glass containers in the UK from 1991 to 1995 indicate the market for jams and spreads has risen by almost 20% and that for oils and vinegars is up by 37%. As a result of the resurgent interest in glass, United Glass has invested in the development of a family of five jars in 8, 12 and 16 oz, 370 ml and 500 g sizes. The four largest have the same diameter and closure size. A more squat 370 ml jar has also been introduced. The jar is the same shape as those popular in continental Europe for pickles, processed vegetables and fruit.
