Glass sector companies and organisations gathered at St. Helens, Britain, in February to further develop the “EGGEN“ (European Glass and Glazing Education and Training Network) project conceived by UEMV, the European Glaziers Association. The project is now definitively launched, following the award of a grant from the European Union (EU) as part of its “Leonardo“ programme. Previously, UEMV had produced occupational profiles applicable to the glass and glazing sector, and the European Commission had given the initiative the status of a “transnational project“. AGE, Automotive Glazing Europe, a specialist division of UEMV, in collaboration with other European partners, contributed to the venture with the development of a training manual and video for the automotive glass repair and replacement sector. The “EGGEN“ network is designed to enhance interaction between companies, national vocational training organisations, training specialists and associations. The main purpose is thus to improve the availability and quality of standard European training and assessment programmes with EU-based training elements and EU-based certification, alongside which national objectives can also be fulfilled. About 60 participants are now involved in “EGGEN“, of which 25 are partners in the “Leonardo“ programme. Representatives come from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. During the February meeting, the final Plan of Approach was discussed and accepted, and is to be developed by the CIBB Centre for the Innovation of Vocational Education and Training in the Netherlands. The next meeting of “EGGEN“ partners will be held during Glastec “96 in Dsseldorf, Germany.
