The Digital Future of Optics: International experts make action recommendations

The first ZEISS Symposium ‘Optics in the Digital World’ was held in Oberkochen, Germany on 23 June 2016 and networked around 200 international scientists and leading industry representatives.

The focus was on current questions related to optics and photonics. This scientific field makes digitization possible, but digitization is increasingly shaping optics and photonics.
The workshop results have been collected in three White papers. These have been published at www.zeiss.com/zeiss-symposium and are available for anyone who is interested. The White papers do not only describe the state of the art in these research fields, but also identify the key fields of action.
In the future, optical technologies will be shaped by increasing digitization and big data applications. These include computer-aided image processing, processing large datasets in optics, obtaining information from data, visualization for augmented and virtual reality scenarios (AR/VR) as well as computer vision and machine learning.
The ZEISS Symposium will be held every two years following the same format. The Symposium is intended to serve as a platform for optics experts to identify trends and research requirements in this field. The results will be published in a series of additional White papers.
