Taiwan is set to become the world“s biggest supplier of electronic-grade glass fibre yarns following the completion of expansion projects of three major producers. Nittobo Norplex Oak Co., a joint venture of the printed circuit board (PCB) division of Allied Signal of the United States along with a Japanese partner was scheduled to set up its NT$1 billion second production line on 2 December 1996. The company now produces 12,000 tonness of the product, the key materials for PCBs. The new line will double the output, with 80% going to Taiwan“s mid- and downstream electronics companies and the remainder to overseas markets. Both Taiwan Glass and PFG Fiber Glass Corp. are now actively expanding their production facilities. Taiwan Glass currently produces 24,000 tonnes a year and will increase the capacity to 39,000 tonness next year. PFG Fiber Glass, set up jointly by Nan Ya Plastics and the PFG Corp. of the US, will also double its output to 40,000 tonnes. The combined supply volume of 100,000 tons a year will raise Taiwan“s international market share of the product to over 35%.
