US firm Sunglass Hut International has reported that sales for the four weeks up to 1 February 1997 were US$ 28.5 million, an increase of 21.6% on the US$ 23.5 million reported for the same period in 1996. Comparable store sales for the four-week period ending 1 February 1997 decreased 0.6%. Sales for the 13-week fourth quarter ending on 1 February 1997 increased 17.2% to US$ 124.9 million, compared to US$ 106.6 million for the same 13-week fourth quarter a year earlier. Comparable store sales for the 13-week period decreased 3.7%. Sales for the 52 weeks ending 1 February 1997 increased 27.4% to US$ 527.1 million, as compared to sales of US$ 413.6 million for the same period in 1996. Comparable store sales for the 52-week fiscal year ended 1 February 1997 increased 2.5%. “Despite a difficult comparable store sales comparison of 14.6% in January of 1996, this January“s performance reflected an improvement from both November“s and December“s results,” said Jack B. Chadsey, President and CEO. “As we begin a new fiscal year, the management team of Sunglass Hut International is focused on executing our 1997 business plan which is designed to re-energise the core sunglass business in each of our store locations.”
