The history of the Italian glassworks in Trezzano sul Naviglio dates back long before it became part of the Vetropack Group in 2015. Founded in 1960, the factory gradually expanded to cover an area of more than 85,000 square metres over the years. Throughout its existence, the plant changed ownership several times, with each owner contributing to its development by introducing innovations, adapting production and strengthening its position as a key player in the Italian packaging glass market.
In July 2015, Vetropack Group acquired the plant, integrating it into its organisational structure under the name Vetropack Italia, thereby reinforcing its long-term position in one of the most important European markets.
However, Vetropack’s ambition was not only to grow, but also to strengthen its position in the domestic market and create potential for future development. The Trezzano sul Naviglio facility could no longer meet increasing market demand or the group’s long-term strategic goals. Due to the limited space available for expansion, the decision was made not to invest in modernising the existing plant once the furnaces reached the end of their service life in 2021.
In response, in 2018 the Vetropack Group announced the acquisition of a 347,000 square metre plot of land in the industrial zone of Boffalora Sopra Ticino, not far from the original site.
After more than a year and a half of construction, the heating process for two new furnaces began in May 2023. The official inauguration of the new plant followed in October 2023. This modern, high-tech facility has become Vetropack’s flagship plant, offering up to 70 percent higher production capacity, maximum flexibility, a high degree of automation and a strong focus on sustainability — a key factor from the beginning of the project.
Employees from Trezzano were transferred to the new facility, symbolically completing the transition from traditional manufacturing to a technologically advanced future.
