Japanese Sony Corp. officials have announced that a Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, US, plant that will produce glass for Sony televisions will be 25% larger than first planned. Since the end of November 1995, earth-moving crews have been working two shifts a day to get the American Video Glass Co. plant up and running to meet a rapidly growing market for 27- and 32-inch TVs, said American Video president, Donald R. Dicken. According to the company, the plant will produce 1.5 million to 2 million TV picture tubes a year, and is expected to employ 500 when it opens in 1997. American Video is a joint venture of Sony and Corning Asahi Video Products Co., which was formed by Corning Inc. and the US subsidiary of Asahi Glass Co. of Japan. The new plant will have 500,000 sq. ft. of space rather than the 400,000 originally planned, stated Suehiro Nakamura, managing director of Sony and chairman of the management committee of American Video.
