British glassware company Rockware Glass is investing heavily in its Portland factory in Irvine, Scotland, which supplies bottles to the Scotch whisky industry. Rockware, part of the BTR industrial conglomerate, has already spent UK 16 million on upgrading the factory with a further UK 14 million this year. Up to UK 25 million is to be spent on building a new glass furnace in 1997. The Irvine factory makes about 250 million bottles per year, of which 85% are sold to the Scotch whisky trade. Rockware provides some 23% of glass containers for the Scottish spirits industry. Rockware is also spending UK 7 million on new packaging and handling machinery at Irvine that uses returnable packaging. The company not only makes bottles to order, it also has an in-house team that designs to customer specifications.
