In collaboration with Nyltech, a joint venture of Rhone-Poulenc (France) and Snia (Italy), Rhodia of Brazil has added nylon 6 Technyl C to its range of engineering plastics. It already makes Technyl A nylon 6 and Technyl B, a copolymer of nylon 6 and nylon 6.6. Nylon 6 is often specified for car parts, where much of the market is. Technyl C will be available in various colours; in a form reinforced with fibre glass; and with fibre glass and a thermal protection agent. The car industry uses 40% of the nylon composites supplied in Brazil, a further 30% being used for domestic electrical goods. The total market is 24,000 tonnes/year, about 25% being nylon 6. Rhodia has 70% of the market for nylon 6.6 and aims in the medium term to supply 50% of the nylon 6 market. The total capacity for Technyl nylon compounds at its plants at Santo Andre and Sao Bernardo do Campo is 18,000 tonnes/year and it has polymerisation capacity of 60,000 tonnes/year.
