Glass, paint and chemical conglomerate PPG Industries is to rehire 45 employees who were laid off in July 2003 from the company“s fiberglass plant in Lexington, North Carolina. Increased demand and a decline in inventory had prompted the company to recall the staff. Twenty-five people will return immediately and others will be rehired later, the company said. The company laid off 60 plant employees in July 2004. The recall will bring the Lexington plant workforce to about 700 people. “It“s important to keep in mind, however, that our business remains under severe competitive pressures, especially overseas producers,” Brian Pollock, the plant manager, said in a written statement. “Reducing costs remains a priority.” In 2001, the company employed 1,400 people in Lexington.
