PPG Industries said 15 June 2004 that it is providing the engineering design and process technology for a new fiber glass plant to be built in Clarksville, Tennessee., for MW/MB, a joint venture of roofing companies Tamko Roofing Products, Inc., and IKO Industries, Ltd. Under a long-term services agreement, PPG will also provide bushings, technical services, technology updates and employee training, and negotiate for supply of raw materials. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The plant, which will have a manufacturing capacity of 150 million pounds (68 million kg), is expected to be in service by early 2006 to produce wet chopped strands for Tamko, based in Joplin, Montana, and IKO, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The facility will provide a portion of the fiber glass needed by the two companies, which will continue buying wet chop fiber glass from the merchant market. “PPG“s leadership in the fiber glass industry, while not competing as a roofing products manufacturer, uniquely positions us as a valuable partner in this venture,” said Vicki Holt, vice president of PPG“s fiber glass business. “We are pleased to bring the full scope of our technology and service to help the respective businesses to grow, while increasing our exposure in the roofing business.” Facility co-owners Tamko and IKO will each take 50% of the production from the facility for in-house use. O“Neal Constructors, LLC, of Greenville, South Carolina, is general contractor for construction of the plant. PPG is one of the world“s largest manufacturers of continuous-strand fiber glass, with eight manufacturing facilities worldwide, focused primarily on the global electronics, thermoplastics and general industrial markets.
