Depite the closure of the Mazda-Ford car plant in Auckland, New Zealand, Wellington-based vehicle glassmaker Pilkington New Zealand will not be laying off any staff. General manager Mike Suggate said that Ford accounted for about one third of its production for the local vehicle assembly industry. The total assembly industry accounted for about 20% of the company“s overall output. Mr Suggate even stated that if new export plans were successful, more staff may well be needed. “We are investing heavily in technology for export markets,” he said.
