Lynch Machinery, of the US, has recently announced that in December 1995 and in January 1996, the company shipped two glass presses for manufacture of high definition TV picture tubes to a Chinese customer by Russian Antonov-124 cargo plane, the world“s second largest aircraft. According to the company, the four weeks saved by sending the presses by air as opposed to sea was worth the extra expense of flying the press to Lynch“s customer. The Lynch HDTV press can make 4 to 6 million television screens per year and the gain in four weeks production will more than offset the cost of air freighting 76 tons. Lynch Machinery is a major manufacturer of glass press equipment and, according to the company, is the only manufacturer which sells the large HDTV press. Since Lynch developed HDTV pressing equipment four years ago, twenty have been sold to TV glassmakers in the United States, France, Korea, China, and India. Lynch Machinery usually transports equipment to Savannah, Georgia, US, by truck, then transfers the equipment to ships for transport around the world. This time, the Chinese needed the equipment quickly and, explains the company, Lynch delivered.
