There was a 14% increase in Indian production of basic inorganic chemicals in 1995-1996, with that of sodium hydrosulfide increasing 31.8% to 25,600 tonnes and that of chlorine rising 30.5% to 706,300 tonnes. Titanium dioxide production fell 36.8% to 19,200 tonnes, and that of sodium bicarbonate was 5% lower at 60,000 tonnes. Production of oxygen was 30.0% higher at 161,600 tonnes. There was a 0.9% increase in production of both caustic soda, to 407,000 tonnes, and soda ash, to 501,000 tonnes, in April-July 1996, compared with the same period in 1995. Demand for inorganic chemicals in April-May 1996 was 57,600 tonnes, compared with 52,500 tonnes in April-May 1995. In April-July 1996, inorganic chemical imports totalled 8800 tonnes compared with 18,800 tonnes in April-July 1995.
