German vehicle lighting group Hella KG Hueck & Co. has set up two joint ventures in China to produce car lights for Volkswagen (VW) models. Hella joined Changchun Vehicular Lighting Factory (CVLF) in the northern Chinese city of Changchun to set up Changchun Hella Automotive Ltd. The DM 7 million initial investment costs are being split 60/30/10 between Hella, CVLF and a private investor from Hong Kong. The company will fit full lighting systems for the VW Jetta, with annual capacity planned at 100,000 vehicles. A second phase of operations from 1997 will see the plant“s range extended to cover other VW and Audi models. In Shanghai, Hella is cooperating with Shanghai Pudong Automobile Lamp Factory in setting up Shanghai Automotive Lighting Ltd. Initial investments are planned at DM 10 million, with Hella taking on 55%. The plant will fit lighting systems for the VW Santana. There are plans to extend the range to cover two VW models as well as Renault and Peugeot vehicles.
