New jobs and a $30 million investment are coming to South Point, Ohio
HarbisonWalker International has announced it has selected The Point Industrial Park in South Point, Ohio, for its next plant which could be up and running quickly.
HarbisonWalker is the largest supplier of monolithic refractory products in the USA. Protective substances required in factories require extremely high heat like steel aluminum to keep the machinery from melting.
This is a heavily automated industry, so it’s likely to mean 30 to 40 jobs, but Bill Dingus, the executive director for the Lawrence County Economic Development Corporation, said it will come with good pay and good benefits. “We see a lot of future for heavy industry coming back to the U.S. and refractory will be a real fundamental piece for that regain.” According to HWI, the facility will be operational by early next year.

“We get a huge number of leads through our existing industries. We see HWI being a real partner. If their experience is as positive as we believe it will be, they will help encourage other people to consider The Point.” Dingus adds that two big factors influenced the decision, the ability of the Point to guarantee a building in seven months and the logistics of having both a rail line and a port on the Ohio River nearby. HWI will build on the southernmost 10-acre parcel, not too far from Solida Road and South Point Elementary School. Plans are still subject to due diligence and finalizing a grant application.
