South Korean Hankuk Electric Glass has announced that it has opened its second glass bulb factory, which will be located in Kumi, South Kyongsang Province, South Korea. The new plant will have an annual production of 7 million panels and funnels each for use in television display screens. The factory, which took 2 years and an investment of 140 billion won (US$ 175 million), boosted the company“s total glass bulb production to 22 million units annually. “With the completion of the factory, we will be able to meet demands from manufacturers of high-end TVs, including wide-screen television and high-definition televisions,” a company spokesman said. Industry experts expected that the newly-dedicated glass bulb factory will save some US$ 100 million for the domestic industry a year, replacing 60% of the imports. Samsung Corning, South Korea“s other glass bulb company, is currently turning out 27 million units a year.
