The US firm Strainoptic Technologies, Inc. has supplied Guardian Industries with its advanced PC-based SCA-1500 stress scanner for on-line stress monitoring at Guardian“s float glass plant in DeWitt in the state of Iowa, US. The scanner, installed in May, is based on a patented process owned by Strainoptic, and is an upgraded version of an existing system already supplied to other float glass plants. It monitors the float glass in real time, translating an optical signal into measured stress and providing a graph from the readings taken. The system also provides zonal-output feedback to facilitate process control automation. Strainoptic, based in North Wales, Pennsylvania, US, said the scanner will help Guardian evaluate the float line cooling process and make adjustments when necessary to eliminate cut-line problems and reduce rejects. It also added that by Guardian will have the distinct advantage of maximising production of shippable glass.
