5 February 1998: Glavunion of the Czech Republic, the largest producer of flat glass in central and eastern Europe and also a part of the world“s largest, Japan-based glassmaker Asahi Glas, reported a turnover of over Kc 7 billion last year, its highest ever, CEO Stepan Popovic said recently. While the company saw a profitable turnover, the firm did not manage, however, to make up for the huge loss of last spring, which the company said was caused by production problems on the float line. “The worse it is as these problems appeared at a time when demand for glass was enormous,” Popovic said. More precise results of the Glavunion group for 1997 will be announced in the near future, Glavunion spokesman Martin Kubat said. The Glavunion group consists of five plants of the parent company, the joint-stock companies Vitrablok, Splintex Czech, Glavostav, Chodoglav and distribution companies.
