GfE contributes to the consultation on the New European Bauhaus

From September 19 to October 17, the European Commission gathered stakeholders’ feedback on the next steps of the New European Bauhaus (NEB).

Announced in 2020, the New European Bauhaus is a transdisciplinary initiative which aims at supporting several of the European Commission’s political priorities. As underlined in the Call for Evidence, the NEB “promotes a sustainable and competitive economy by driving decarbonisation in the built environment, accelerating the move towards clean and cheaper energy, and promoting circular design and resilient models.”

Glass for Europe supports the NEB’s ambition to mainstream sustainability and resilience principles at neighbourhood and building level and calls for the recognition of flat glass as a key enabler of climate adaptation within the initiative’s next phase. To do so would require focusing on four priorities as part of the new Bauhaus initiative namely:

  • Addressing overheating risks through high-performance glazing;
  • Supporting high-performance and cost-efficient renovations – the new Bauhaus intends to promote a ‘renovation first’ principle;
  • Enhancing circularity in the built environment and developing closed-loop recycling systems;
  • Fostering clean and cheaper energy through innovative glazing solutions.

These four pillars are essential to ensure that the New European Bauhaus contributes to broader European objectives and supports the goals of key upcoming legislatives: the European Affordable Housing Plan, the Circular Economy Act and the implementation of the Clean Industrial Deal.
