Director Bela Tarsince has reported that since its privatisation in 1989, Hungarian General Electric Lighting Tungsram (GELT) has invested HFt 1 billion in its plant in the town of Vac. One third of this investment was for environmental protection. Dust emissions have been reduced to 1% of former levels and 17,000 tonnes of glass fragments have been collected, the scrap accumulating from 20 years of light tube production. Broken glass is now recycled in the plant. GELT was the first company in Hungary to announce to the Environment Protection Directorate that it would begin a voluntary self-assessment project. The result will make the operation of GELT more simple and transparent, with the current 77 permits replaced by one general permit. GELT currently produces 40 million conventional light bulbs annually, plus glass for other factories. Production capacity is currently being increased, as a result of which a new product may be introduced in the near future. GELT Lighting, the 100% owner of GELT, has invested a total of US$ 600 million in Hungary since it bought a majority in Tungsram in 1989.
